Just set it and forget it for a few hours. You'll enjoy the mouth-watering aroma that will waft through your kitchen as your crockpot does all the work and simmers this meal to full-flavored perfection. You'll have no trouble getting your family to the table with this delicious soup!
What is kielbasa?
The word kielbasa comes from Poland and it means "sausage." Kielbasa is a meaty staple of Polish cuisine and can be found in many varieties. If you're lucky enough to live in an area that has a Polish deli, try to purchase your kielbasa there. They'll have a wider selection than in your grocery store and you'll probably get some great tips on which types of kielbasa would work best for what you're intending to cook with it. That said, the kielbasa that you'll find in your grocery store will work just fine for this recipe. It will be cooked already so all you really have to do is just slice it for the soup.
Why you'll love this soup
This Kielbasa soup is a creamy soup even though it has a base of chicken broth., There's a cheesy element to it, too, which also helps make it creamy. A cup of Parmesan cheese plus a can of cheddar cheese soup are added to give it dimension and thickness. As the potatoes cook and soften, they will also help thicken the soup.
The creaminess helps make it a hearty kielbasa soup and the cheese factor has been known to make it a hit with kids of all ages. The fact that it contains veggies is somehow overlooked when there's cheese involved, so make this soup with confidence that it will be gobbled up by your hungry kids!
Is this soup freezer-friendly?
Yes! This is an awesome kielbasa soup to make in several batches, especially if you own more than one crockpot. Make two batches with the intention of freezing one of them as well as any leftovers from the other batch. Make sure and fully cool the soup before adding it to your freezer-friendly containers for storage. Kielbasa soup will keep for up to 2 months.
Cooking Tips
- Make sure you purchase cooked Kielbasa sausage that you slice, not raw sausage that you have to cook.
- Don't feel like peeling the potatoes before you cube them? No problem. Just be sure to scrub them well to remove any dirt.
- Love garlic? Add more! The potatoes and milk in the kielbasa soup will absorb a lot of the flavorings and sometimes herbs and spices can get lost in all that starch and liquid, so feel free to add more if that's something your family likes.
What to serve with Kielbasa Soup
We love a hearty cornbread with this soup. Serve it alongside the soup, or as some family members like to do, crumble it on top of the soup and dig in.
We also love a good crusty bread with a healthy dose of butter on it! Sourdough bread would be wonderful with kielbasa soup. If you're sticking with a Polish theme, consider a darker bread or one that's popular with Polish cuisine.
